Spread the news: GoldCoast Salads breaks ground on new Naples facility
GoldCoast Salads isn't just spreading gourmet seafood.
From a small cafe to a 16,800-square-foot building, the local family-owned business continues to grow in tough economic times and is now expanding to a new, 65,000-square-foot production facility in East Naples.
"It's a humbling experience," GoldCoast Salads President Peter Radno Jr. said. "I knew that the seafood spread would be a hit, but it really surprised us how well all of the spreads have done over time."
From 1996 to 2002, Radno Jr., who created the recipe for the lobster spread, operated the Bear E Patch Café in the Bed, Bath Beyond Plaza at the intersection of Pine Ridge and Airport-Pulling roads in North Naples. GoldCoast Salads was founded in the fall of 2001 by Radno Jr. and his father, Peter Radno. Then, his brother Adam joined the company.
Radno Jr. credits the success and growth of the family company to the three seafood spreads "Maine lobster, smoked salmon and blue crab " excellent leadership in the market, and a great food demonstration program.
He referred specifically to the help the company has received from Alisa Helms, vice president of community banking for Regions Bank and the U.S. Small Business Administration, plus his father.
The company, currently based at 3565 Plover Ave. in White Lake Corporate Park, supplies about 2 million products to northeast and southeast regions throughout the nation, including Costco, Sam's Club and BJ's Wholesale Club. The company also has plans to expand to the Midwest in the fall.
The projected gross sales for 2011 is about $20 million, Radno Jr. said.
Despite the economy, annual sales continue to increase about 30 percent, so hopefully in a good economy we grow 50 percent, the elder Peter Radno said.
The larger facility on 3600 Shaw Blvd., also in White Lake Corporate Park, will enable the company to expand its product line, while also creating more jobs in Collier County.
The $6.5 million state-of the-art facility is slated for completion in October 2012.
Construction will be done by DeAngelis Diamond Construction. The new building is expected to generate 500 construction jobs, DeAngelis Diamond officials said.
The manufacturing area will quadruple from 2,200-square-foot to 8,800-square-foot. The current headquarters houses the administrative offices, food preparation, processing and shipping activities.
GoldCoast Salads plans to add three new seafood spreads over the next five years, Radno Jr. said. However, he declined to say what kind.
The new facility will create 15 to 50 new jobs in Collier County over the next five years, he said. It will also enhance the companies food safety program.
As the facility grows, the company hopes to expand to the food service industry, including restaurants, Radno Jr. said.
As of March, the company supplies its lobster spread to Blue Martini.
Goldcoast Salad operates four offices across the United States, including North Carolina, New Jersey, Maryland and Florida.
The East Naples manufacturing facility has 35 employees, including office personal, managers, and manufacturing workers. The company has a total of 280 employees in the nation.
Underneath a white tent in front of the construction area, about 30 people gathered Monday morning for a ground-breaking ceremony to kick off the new facility. Eleven local officials shoveled the first loads of dirt.
Among attendees were Collier County Economic Development Council president Bob Mulhere, Ryan Goldberg, Regions Bank president of the Southwest Florida operation and DeAngelis Diamond Construction officials.
The expansion of Goldcoast Salads will help create new jobs and investments in Collier County, Mulhere said.
"It's a wonderful thing to see a small businesses grow," Mulhere said.
The expansion of Goldcoast Salad continues to show that there are business opportunities to expand in Collier County, Goldberg said. He added that Regions Bank can provided financial solutions.
"It's a challenging economy," Goldberg said, "but the future looks bright."
